Mangaluru International Airport Sets New Standard with Innovative Runway Re-carpeting Project
Mangaluru International Airport has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing the re-carpeting of its 2.45 kilometre-long runway. The project, aimed at ensuring compliance with aviation safety regulations, was accomplished within a commendable timeframe of 75 days, as confirmed by airport authorities. What sets this re-carpeting endeavor apart is the employment of an innovative technique, marking the first-ever flexible overlay of asphalt on a rigid runway in India. The airport’s ambitious plans for this project were set in motion with a preliminary survey commencing on January 27.
As the second busiest airport in Karnataka, Mangaluru International Airport manages an average of 36 aircraft movements per day. To minimize disruptions to flight services, the airport implemented a carefully planned 8-1/2 hour NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) period from 9.30 am to 6 pm each day, specifically allocated for the re-carpeting works.
A staggering amount of 81,696 tonnes of asphalt, equivalent to laying 82 kilometers of road, was utilized for the runway re-carpeting. This monumental task was made possible through the utilization of 80 advanced pieces of equipment, highlighting the airport’s commitment to ensuring a top-notch infrastructure.
